A recent opinion article in the New York Times advocates for the inclusion of secular, humanistic and harm reduction approaches like Smart Recovery to addiction and recovery. While I would say that 12-step programs do need more oversight and criticism (like any government supported program) I strongly agree with broadening ways that people can get help in recovering from drug and alcohol addiction.
